I’m a comparative literature and philosophy student studying at Tufts University in Massachusetts, USA. My main intellectual interests include Korean and Japanese modern literature, especially during the Imperial era, North Korean ideology and literature, postcolonialism and diaspora, queer theory, East Asian philosophy, and translation studies. I am especially fond of modern Korean literature, which started in the early 20th century when the influx of Western culture started to influence traditional Korean literature. In the following one hundred years, Korea went through a lot of cultural and political changes, and the literary works from then reflect the confusion and excitement from then.
Besides my penchant for Korean literature, I decided to translate Korean poems for the following reason: In public and college libraries I had visited, Korean novels or poetry anthologies were still rare. When I first started college, I was startled to see Korean literature occupying only one single shelf of a bookcase, while many other ethnic and national literature had numbers of bookcases devoted to them. As a bicultural individual who values both Korean-ness and American-ness, I’d like to see more Korean literature available in the U.S. and other English markets.
Other than Korean literature, I casually explored literature from different parts of the world like Russian Golden Age, Generación del 27, and Black Renaissance in my secondary school, and I am currently conducting a research on the dynamic between North Korean Juche ideology and queer sexualities through studying Juche‘s sense of temporality. In addition to studying queer theory and East Asian literature, I would like to study the possibility of bringing East Asian philosophy–especially Daoism–to the discussion of critical and literary theory in the future.
If you share the same interest or if you simply want to talk to me, I’d love to hear from you. Feel free to shoot me an email at any time: email@example.com.
