I’m a comparative literature and philosophy student in Massachusetts. My main research interests include literary and film theory, Korean and Japanese modern literature, gender and sexuality, postcolonialism and diaspora, literature in times of crisis, East Asian philosophy, and linguistics and translation studies. I especially love modern Korean literature, which started shortly after the break of 1900s. Korea went through a lot of cultural and political changes in the following 100 years, and those cultural changes and political struggles are melted into literature of that time.
Besides my penchant for Korean literature, I decided to translate Korean poems for the following reason: In public and college libraries I had visited, Korean novels or poetry anthologies were still rare. When I first started college, I was startled to see Korean literature occupying only one single shelf of a bookcase, while many other ethnic and national literature had numbers of bookcases devoted to them. As a bicultural individual who values both Korean-ness and American-ness, I’d like to see more Korean literature available in the U.S. and other English markets.
Other than Korean literature, I like literature from many different parts of the world. I’ve tasted a tiny bit of Russian Golden Age, Generación del 27, and Black Renaissance. In addition, in order to study Japanese literature more in depth, I am learning Japanese at an advanced level. As a philosophy student, I also like to read literature pieces that rest on philosophical ideas from existentialism to Daoism.
