Girls of the Fall

Yang Jungja (1944 – present)

In dreary November in the empty schoolyard
where students and teachers are gone and
blossoms and leaves are fallen
seventh-grade girls
who are yet to start puberty
play jumpsies in the corner till late.
“A toy train leaves as it chugs choo choo
carrying cookies and sweets…”
Cold wind bleakly drives away the twilight
that is spread like a legend and
under the fluttering skirts their calves mature.
Through their high bubbly laughter
the dark corner of the schoolyard
brightens like a blooming flower.

가을 소녀들

양정자 (1944 ~ )

학생들도 선생님들도 다 가버린
꽃도 잎도 다 져버린
을씨년스런 11월 텅 빈 교정 한 구석에서
아직 사춘기에 이르지 못한 중 1짜리 계집애들이
늦게까지 고무줄을 하고 논다
“장난감 기차가 칙칙폭폭 떠나간다.
과자와 사탕을 싣고서…..”
전설처럼 깔린 황혼을 스산히 몰고 가는 찬바람에
철럭이는 교복 치마 밑에서 통통히 여무는 종아리
계집아이들의 높고 쾌활한 웃음소리에
어둑신한 교정 한 구석이
꽃핀 것처럼 환하게 밝아지네
